Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a San Francisco-based nonprofit that provides life-sustaining meals and healthy groceries to critically ill neighbors, seniors, and adults with disabilities. The organisation prepares over 2,500 nutritious meals and distributes approximately 200 grocery bags daily to help clients battling serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging.
The organisation operates from two locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, at 730 Polk Street in San Francisco and 1921 San Pablo Avenue in Oakland. Its daily operations are supported by a dedicated team of more than 125 volunteers, and the organisation reports it has never missed a day of delivering meals since its founding.
Project Open Hand employs a "Food Is Medicine" approach to nutrition services and is a founding partner of the Food Is Medicine Coalition. The organisation collaborates with research institutions such as UCSF on related initiatives.
